About the Alliance for Responsible Battery Recycling
Our mission
From Policy to Action Nigeria's Battery Responsibility Body
The Alliance for Responsible Battery Recycling (ARBR) was established in response to the urgent need to manage the growing volume of used batteries in Nigeria responsibly. As battery usage surged across the country — from automotive lead-acid batteries to the rapidly expanding lithium-ion market — it became clear that a structured, government-backed system was needed.
ARBR was approved by the Attorney General of the Federation and registered by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) as a company Limited by Guarantee. We are licensed by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) to implement Nigeria’s Extended Producer Responsibility programme for the battery sector.
We operate under the National Environmental (Electrical/Electronic Sector) Regulations 2011 and collaborate with the Basel Convention Coordination Centre for Africa (BCCC-Africa) under the Federal Ministry of Environment. Our mandate is clear: make battery producers accountable, build collection infrastructure, and protect Nigerian communities from the toxic legacy of improperly disposed batteries.
